Beware of SEO (search engine optimization) companies that promise their service will make your site reach top ranking at the search engines. There really is no way for anyone to guarantee this. Even Google won't give you exact suggestions for reaching the top.
However, they do provide useful and free webmaster tools they can help you get your site up to par. You can utilize these tools to help you diagnose your site - it will even offer HTML tag suggestions that could help your site.
Since quality site inbound links to your site also contribute to your ranking, they've even included a tool that will help you discover how many other sites are actually linking to yours.
While Google won't guarantee that using the webmaster tools or following its suggestion will help you achieve top search engine ranking, they really are useful tools that can point out problems or other issues with your site that you may have overlooked.

Beginner webmasters often don't know what all goes into creating a successful website, not because they've failed to add insightful content, but because they were unaware that they needed to create a sitemap so that Google could easily crawl their site and discover that great content.
To help you know you've done everything that could help you achieve top search engine ranking, take a look at Google's webmaster checklist to ensure that you haven't forgotten any important steps in getting your site properly ranked.
As you examine this checklist you'll notice that they've even provided a "Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide". Be sure to download it and actually take the time to read it and follow the tips that Google suggests.
I find it strange that even though Google has already outlined pretty much everything you need and organized it for you all in one place people have missed out on a lot of this valuable information.
If you want to achieve top search engine ranking in the number 1 search engine, wouldn't it make sense to follow their guidelines?
What Google ultimately wants you to do is create a content rich site that offers solutions to searchers - that's why it continues to be so hard for some websites to accomplish this.
They just don't have enough content that focuses on a particular topic. This is what makes keywords so important - this is the motivation behind search engine optimization.
Google's indexing procedures tells its servers that a focused website will have a certain percentage of keywords that repeat. So if you have a site that offers its visitors travel information, it's very likely that the word "travel" is going to appear several times in your content.
This is why SEO content is so important to helping you achieve top search engine ranking. Don't expect to get close to the top over night - you're going to need a lot of good focused SEO content, properly labeled metatags, and a lot of links to your site in order to get there.
So it's going to take some time. But don't quit. When you can't keep up with writing quality content for your website you have a few options:
You can pay someone else to write content for you if you're really concerned about quality. The economy has made freelance writers extremely affordable these days.
You can ask others if they'd like to market their articles on your site. They'll do this gladly if they see that you have a high trafficked site. But most likely you won't have that type of traffic if you're just starting out, so they won't really see the value in writing an article for your site.
You can search article directories for articles that fit well with your niche and republish them to your site. But be sure to follow their guidelines and make sure that you give the author credit (Don't ever try to pass it off another's writing as your own. This is called "plagiarism!" Don't do it.) The downside to this is that you may or may not be able to remove any affiliate links that these articles may contain. If you find affiliate links that are in direct competition with your own, don't post those articles on your site.
Hopefully, with Google webmaster tools and using all of your available options for getting content onto your site you should at least notice that your rank begins to increase.
No one can guarantee that your site will reach the top search engine ranking for the prime keywords in your niche, but at least you can take control of the areas that you can to influence a positive change in your site's rank.
