SEO Optimization Tips: Strategies to Get You Started!
| |
SEO, or search engine optimization can be very tricky. Search engine algorithms are always changing and thereby making its results very unpredictable.
With that said, you don't want to stress over it to the point that it inhibits your ability to write fresh and compelling content, but it would be foolish to completely disregard SEO optimization altogether.
For those who are just starting out and aren't quite sure what it is, SEO, or search engine optimization describes the process of writing content that repeats important keywords and/or phrases throughout the body of an article or blog post in order to make it easier for search engines to locate your site.
But these are not just any key phrases, but researched and strategically chosen phrases.
For example: Let's say you own a site that promotes or sells camping gear. To lure potential customers into your site, you've written some articles with practical tips for first time campers.
Now to bring them to your site you want these people to be able to find you. In order for your site to be found when someone conducts search on Google with the phrases "camping needs" and "camping essentials", your articles must reuse these phrases over and over.
SEO Tip #1:
Don't go overboard! I'm reluctant to give you a set number of times to repeat these phrases throughout your article, because it really depends on the length of your article and the nature of it.
|
These phrases must fit into the natural flow of your article. Avoid repeating these phrases just to fulfill a quota.
If you do this you'll run the risk of sounding like an idiot and you will completely turn away your potential customers. Consider how would you respond to the following:
these camping essentials are the most important camping essentials.
Would you keep reading? Would you even bother to find out what camping gear this author recommends? Would you end up purchasing anything? Absolutely not!
SEO Tip #2:
Choose one, certainly no more than two key phrases, then use them in your title, paragraph headings where possible, and in at least every other paragraph.
However, I suggest you write the article first without making a conscious effort to include your key phrases. Then go back and add them, but only where they will fit without disrupting the flow of the article.
The above two tips are for webmasters or bloggers without basic HTML skills, however, if you have at least some understanding of HTML you can take your SEO optimization even further with the following tip:
SEO Tip #3:
If your web-page template doesn't automatically do this, make sure you place your key phrase in your HTML title tags.
For example if the title of your article is "5 Camping Essentials for Beginners", you'll want your title tag to look like this:
This is only useful if you have one article per web page, though. If you have paragraph headings that use the key phrase, you can use the HTML header tag to place them there:
Be sure to add a description of the article, and a list of your key words to your HTML meta tags. These are tags that aren't visible on your page, but they help search engines locate your content. A description meta tag looks like:
A keyword meta tag looks like:
These tags should be placed between the and tags on your web-page.
Used together these tips can help increase your site’s chances of moving on up to prime real estate in Google's first page results.
Use this systematic approach to SEO optimization, keeping natural sounding content your first priority, and your traffic will increase in no time.
